pOETRY OF SCENTS
Calam is a Spanish niche perfume house born from a collaboration with Italian designers; it is inspired by the Renaissance spirit and conceived as a bridge between Madrid and Venice.
I recently discovered a niche perfume house that, despite having only five fragrances in its olfactory portfolio, pleasantly surprised me: I tried four of them and liked them all. Two of them even went straight onto my list of favourite perfumes.
It is the niche brand Calam, a relatively new Spanish house, but one that certainly shows great promise.

The scents stand out for their authenticity, their evocative spirit, and their emotions: perfumes with a soul, perfumes that make the soul resonate through memories and through their creators, with unique formulas infused with pheromones.
I tried four perfumes from their portfolio and decided to go through them one by one, starting with those that have already earned a place in my heart.
The first time Oud Grey won me over
I know it is a masculine perfume, but don’t be fooled by the “Homme” on the box, because as we all know, anyone can wear what they like as long as it awakens emotions, feelings, and sensations of well-being.
For me, Oud Grey transported me back in time: to an autumn in 2015, a warm autumn with golden leaves that had just fallen from the trees, bidding farewell to the most beautiful summer. The smell of wood, of dry leaves, the still sweet and warm scent of a summer that was almost fading, yet in which life, sun, and love were still quietly burning.
Oud Grey is a unisex perfume, a woody and understated scent that is at the same time warm and soft, with a sweet, velvety delicacy.
It opens with spicy notes of cardamom and pepper, accords that add personality as well as an intriguing, sophisticated, and slightly understated character. In the heart notes, we find the most velvety oud: woody, aromatic, and sensual, accompanied by creamy and sweet sandalwood.
In the base notes, warm, balsamic, and oriental accords emerge, with resins, amber, and sweet, enveloping vanilla.
It is a perfect perfume for the season ahead. It can be worn by anyone, but I must say that it is just as sensual on a woman as it is absolutely irresistible on a man.
The second perfume that won me over — and that I adore deeply — is Bianco Intenso.
With Bianco Intenso it was love at the first spray, because it transported me back to my childhood, to the scent of lilies, to the very first perfume I fell in love with when I was six years old.
Bianco Intenso is a feminine, sophisticated, and beautifully balanced perfume — a floral harmony with fruity touches, perfectly blended with powdery notes of musk, vanilla, and sandalwood.
The fragrance opens powdery and velvety, with fruity nuances of plum and peach; then the floral notes appear. It is a white-floral scent in which I perceive a strong presence of lily, but also an airy delicacy and a sweet, charming rose.
The base is creamy, sweet, and powdery like fine silk: here we find notes of vanilla, almond, sandalwood, and musk.
Bianco Intenso es un perfume que acaricia. Femenino, delicado, con una sensualidad sutil y diáfana, pero al mismo tiempo con personalidad y profundidad.
The third perfume I tried from the Calam house was Discreto Femme.
A discreet perfume, yet one that whispers; a clean, soft, feminine scent that caresses, that embraces, that makes you feel beautiful, feminine, with a natural and authentic beauty — just as it should be.
Discreto Femme by Calam is a perfume like a tender whisper, an airy floral that speaks of flowers, dew, and delicacy.
If Bianco Intenso stands out for its powdery, fruity-floral and feminine notes, Discreto Femme excels for its discretion and naturalness.
Discreet, ethereal, and luminous, Discreto Femme is a fruity-floral perfume that evokes light, silk, and serenity in a sophisticated and elegant way
It opens with notes of pear, mandarin, and blackcurrant; then, in the heart, we find tuberose, rose, and peach. The base notes are powdery and creamy thanks to heliotrope, musk, and benzoin.
It is a luminous, ethereal, almost translucent perfume, with a moderate longevity due to its Eau Fraîche concentration.
Moreover, the Calam house adds pheromones to its perfumes, giving the scent a subtle and delicate nuance.
Nero Intenso is the last perfume I tried from the Calam house.
Without a doubt, it is a 100% masculine perfume and it has already found its place on Tiberiu’s shelf.
Nero Intenso is an extremely interesting and captivating perfume, but it is distinctly masculine, and I don’t think it can be considered within the unisex category.
It is an elegant, mysterious perfume, full of sensuality and refinement.
It opens with notes of coriander and black pepper, accords that give the perfume character and personality.
In the heart notes we find creamy and powdery nuances of iris and cocoa, while in the base the fragrance becomes woody, velvety, and seductive with notes of sandalwood and patchouli.
Calam perfumes are available as Extrait de Parfum or intense perfume (Nero Intenso, Bianco Intenso, Oud Grey), as well as in Eau Fraîche, with lighter concentrations (Discreto Femme and Discreto Homme).
All the perfumes contain pheromones, whose function is to subtly enhance the personality of the scent and add a distinctive touch.
